Street markets as spaces of diversity
Membes of the site might be interested to read the report I did for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation called Markets as Social Spaces which argued for the support and retention of markets as spaces for social interaction.
I will attach the PDF reference here.

I have also written a number of articles on markets if anyone is interested. Amongst others: The Magic of the Market: Sociality in a Neglected Public Space. Urban Studies July 2009
A chapter in my book City Publics: the (dis) enchantments of urban encounters
A Politics of Resentment: Shopkeepers in a London Neighbourhood
Ethnic and Racial Studies 2005
Happy to enter into dialogue with others who are interested.

I acted as special adviser to the UK House of Commons Select Committee review into Traditional Retail Markets last year which led to some important new initiatives and policy changes. I am concerned as to what is now going to happen to the proposals and initiatives now that the new government has come into power.
Has anyone any news on this?
