Drupal is a web content management system and web application framework. It is also a vibrant, growing, and fun community of programmers, activists and communicators. The core Drupal software is the poster child for Web 2.0, community driven web site software. Drupal was created by Dries Buytaert of Belgium in 2000. He is an open source software programmer and PhD stduent at the University of Ghent. Drupal is an English transliteration of the Dutch word “druppel” which means “drop. See: http://buytaert.net/
Drupal rose to prominence as the core software used for Howard Dean's Presidential campaign in 2003. Zack Rosen started the DeanSpace project in 2003 during his summer break from the University of Illinois. He then left school to take a job at the Howard Dean presidential campaign head-quarters in Burlington, Vermont as a web-developer and technical volunteer coordinator. He was responsible for servicing the web-technology needs of the state campaign offices, constituency groups, and grassroots web developers. Afterwards he co-founded and directed the Civic Space project for two years. He is active business leader in the Drupal open-source community and has freely contributed his expertise to hundreds of grassroots web projects.
